| Amalfi Coast & Capri |
| One of the most purely romantic sights in the world, the patchwork of pink and white houses in these villages clinging to the rock has been captivating visitors to the Amalfi coast for generations, major poets and artists among them. The best view is looking up from the water. You can get the whole panorama: the cobbled streets dotted with jasmine and honeysuckle trees, the yellow and blue tiles of the church and if the breezes are right, the scent of lemons from nearby groves. Nearby Capri with its rocky coastal scenery, famous Blue Grotto and dramatic Faraglioni Rocks always beckon a jet-set sophisticated crowd. Why Go: Cliffside villages reaching down to the sea—the views don’t get more breathtaking than this, stylish A-list restaurants, designer and local artisan boutiques. When to Go: June-September. Essential Ports: Naples, Procidia, Ischia, Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Ponza and Palmarola. Essential experiences: The Amalfi Drive with its hair-pin turns, shopping for sandals at L'Arte del Sandalo Caprese (his designs have graced the feet of Jackie O and Sophia Loren), the Piazetta in Capri Town, Caprese cuisine at Da Paolino under the lemon trees and a tender circumnavigation around Capri, through the grottos, caves and Faraglioni rocks. Local favorite: Dinner in La Sponda, the restaurant of the exceptionally romantic hotel Le Sirenuse in Positano under dozens of flickering votive candles; lunch at Lo Scoglia Amalfi in the village of Nerano (which is only reachable by boat) and lunch at La Fontelina, located at the foot of the Faraglioni rocks. |
