Bahamas

The Bahamas
Of the 700 islands that comprise this island chain, Nassau and Paradise Island are more known, but it’s the Exuma chain and Eleuthera and Harbor Island that truly deserve the spotlight. Dotted with pastel gingerbread-fringed houses, ringed by beaches of soft pink sand and surrounded by electric blue water, these islands are quintessential havens for any water activity. The best way to savor the uninhabited cays of the Exuma Land and Sea Park or drop in at Harbor Island to comb the world famous three-mile pink sand beach is, no doubt, by boat.

Why Go: Spectacular water, pristine beaches, unspoiled island life, this is for those who want to get away from it all. Yacht captains from all corners say this is the most gorgeous cruising ground in the world.

When to Go: Year round except for hurricane season. The water gets delightfully warm in the summer months.

Essential Ports: Warderick Wells, Staniel Cay, Compass Cay, Shroud Cay, Highbourne Cay, Allens Cay and Harbor Island.

Essential experiences: Bone fishing and snorkeling, zipping around through tidal creeks on a personal watercraft, lunch on the terrace of Sip Sip on Harbour Island, drop in at Big Major's Spot to see the pigs swim or snorkel into Thunderball Grotto.

Local favorite: Bahamanian cuisine is all about conch. If you’re on Harbour Island, the place to go is Queen Conch for their sole menu item, conch salad. In the Exumas, Sam’s Conch Stand on Great Exuma serves theirs made to order.
